Nano keeps 25 UDB spies

Military officers in the Kukës Division serving the Serbs. The prime minister refuses to dismiss them Information about their involvement has come not only from the National Information Service, but also from the Albanian Foreign Service A sharp dispute in the KPD, rivals are tearing each other apart Brokaj did not sign off on Nano's tenders Nano: “The Shkodrans started messing with the army before the minister arrived.” “If it weren't for me and Boksi, you'd be in prison” The Socialist Party remains under the control of the old communist cliques The changes at the head of the Ministry of Defence are entirely conditioned by personal ties of individuals to the old PKSH and former State Security cliques. The political opponents of transforming the army into a force integrated into Euro-Atlantic structures and attached to the KLP operate hidden behind official props. Such opposing elements are against the clear line of alliance with the United States and the Western security structures. In implementing the scenario for bringing Nano back to power after the communist rebellion of March 1997, a category of senior military officers is involved, who, because of their anti-KLP positions, had been marginalized under the PD government. Nevertheless, the return of these elements to key posts in the Ministry of Defence caused their old anti-Atlantic fervor to erupt with renewed force. Thus, according to information from the newspaper “RD”, this happened with the appointment to the post of personnel director of the Ministry of Defence of Colonel N.[?] Nano, who had been implicated in close relations with the Yugoslav secret service, the UDB. According to information from SHIK, also forwarded to the KLD, the colonel's activity in cooperation with the UDB dates back at least to the 1970s and continued consistently until 1992, the period when the democratic government removed him from functions in the apparatus of the Ministry of Defence. After the Socialists came to power, he returned with the same mission to the key personnel post. He currently keeps a number of 25 military officers, all implicated in relations with the UDB. These officers, according to “RD” sources, are mostly well-known names and ranks in Kukës, where they also serve. Deployed in the Kukës Division, they are clearly at the service of the Serbs and their interests. The purpose of their involvement is that, in the event of a war in Kosovo, they will expose the deployment of Albanian troops to Serb aggression. Recently, according to this information, Nano has refused to dismiss them, thus openly taking the side of Serbian interests. According to this practice, it seems that the mission of these military officers is expected to be activated with the intensification of the conflict in Kosovo. ON PAGE 3

Polo: Albania is reborn through new elections

Lezha ignores the “Nano” government. A warm reception at the SP for Kunder, Pollo and Hajdari “The changes in the government by Nano are like a drowning man clutching at a straw” Yesterday in Lezha, leaders of the PDSH held meetings with the party structures in this district, with democrats and citizens of Lezha, about what the current political situation is and the decisions made by the KPD to overcome it. First, the head of the organization department in the PD, Mr. Kyçyku, said that this would also be the only way out of the crisis and that the time has come for Nano to leave the political scene, a demand made by all Albanians. Mr. Pollo also told those present that this was the purpose of this visit to Lezha: to show that the country now seeks a new solution through new elections. As can be seen, the only solution for the country is free voting, and with this parliament and this government Nano cannot govern the country. This is now clear to everyone. Nano has run out and is heading toward his political expiry date; the time has come for him, like all communists, to leave the political scene and make way for the administration of a rule-of-law state. Speaking about the Kosovo crisis, Mr. Pollo said that this is an alarm raised by the entire international factor, that the crisis in Kosovo could plunge the whole Balkans into catastrophe. He said that the positions of the Albanian government, which because of its ties with Belgrade is showing itself to be sluggish and ineffective in this direction, must be strongly condemned. He assessed that with the overthrow of the Nano government and the arrival of a technical government in Albania, we could have an impact and an activation of the Albanian factor regarding the rights of the Kosovars and the creation of a government of these rights.
